What is a panic attack?
Also know as anxiety attacks, or panic disorder, one third of the population experience panic attacks at some stage in their lives. The experience is extremely powerful, often overwhelming with sufferers often thinking they may be having a heart attack, mental breakdown or dying. Norwegian painter Edvard Munch was known to suffer panic attacks, as depicted in his painting the Scream.
Despite being such a profound and scary experience, the good news is that they are remarkably easy to treat. Indeed most of our clients never have another panic after the first session, which they can’t completely control within the first minute.
Panic occurs when someone gets anxious, feels the anxiety and worries about it which then increases the feelings of anxiety which makes them even more worried and so on. The anxiety snowballs making the sufferer feel even more out of control and so on. This can last anything from a minute or two or for hours. It often leads to avoiding certain situations, e.g lifts, busy places, crowds, motorways, planes, cinemas, or anywhere where there seems to be no easy exit (often thought of as claustrophobia or agoraphobia). It can also cause increased monitoring of the body to check for an impending attack: “How’s my heart rate, how are my palms, does my chest feel OK?”, and ‘self-diagnosing’.
What if you can be cured in 2-4 sessions?
The basic strategy for curing panic involves:
- Explain panic attacks and two methods of how to control them and ‘switch them off’.
- Reduce base anxiety levels (by changing perceptions /beliefs/expectations, removing negative inner dialogue and imagery, and by teaching self-hypnosis, relaxation, hypnotic CD’s etc)
- Using NLP to de-traumatise worst memories of panic (panic can be triggered by memories of previous panic)
- Rebuild behaviours which have been avoided e.g. public transport (through goal-setting and confidence building with hypnosis)
At The Human Performance Clinic we have been working with this problem in all its varieties and guises. Because of the variety of forms that panic takes it is sometimes misdiagnosed as depression, anxiety, social phobia, or a lack of confidence. However in most cases we fix panic in 2-4 sessions and begin the confidence rebuilding process by getting the client out and about ‘to prove’ to themselves that they are completely back in control.
Just suppose you took action today?
Panic attacks and agoraphobia have blighted many lives and needlessly so. This is due to misdiagnosis or mistreatment, or the individual struggling to cope in other ways e.g. through avoidance, using alcohol.
The fact of the matter is that in most circumstances this problem is fairly straightforward and quick to treat leading to a full and permanent recovery.
We do a free initial consultation to discuss your specific issues and how to solve them. If you wish, you are welcome to bring a partner or friend to sit in with you.
